Guide to Industrial Vacuum Filters: Types and How to Choose
Vacuum systems are the backbones of achieving efficient operations though, even their relability and functionality ends up depending on a various number of different modifiers, including "the vacuum filter".
If filtration is not done properly, dust, oil, vapors, moisture, debris can end up entering the vacuum pump, which could cause clogging, higher rate of wear and less suction power.,
To ensure that our customers can end up satisfied with our products, we have decided to give you a quick guide on the different types of vacuum filters, their technical information and how to choose the right one for your work.
In-Line Compact Filters
They are lightweight and compact filteration units that are direclty installed onto the vacuum pipelines or as close as possible to the point of use (suction pump, clamping tolls etc)
Transparent housing in the center of the filter allows for quick inspections to made without pausing the ongoine operations.
Pleated paper is used to capture the dust, however it should not be used when there is water or moisture in the environment.
Polypropylene and stainless steel mesh are ideal choices when having to dea with moisture and want a sustainable equipment that can be washed and be used again.
It is best used for pick-and-place automations, vacum packaging and space-restricted setups requiring localized fractionated filtration.
Heavy-Duty Paper Cartridge Filters
In work environments that is filled with high amounts of dust, such as woodworking, ceramics, marble cutting, or bulk powder processing, the standard filters usually end up getting clogged way earlier than their expected lfie expectancy. Heavy-Duty filters that have pleated paper cartridges have a higher surface area to fix this issue.
It filters down as small as 5 to 7 microns (μ), letting it capture extremely fine particulate matter with ease.
The pleated paper is inside a perforated steel casing, protected by a painted steel bowl with quick-release latches for fast maintenance.
It's important to keep the filters dry since the paper elements degrade rapidly when exposed to oil vapors or condensation.
Heavy-Duty Metal Mesh Filters
For applications that requires the mechanism to withstand against liquids, metal mesh filters are the common choice.
Standard mesh ratings are somewhere around 60 microns (μ), with 100 and 300 micron variant options available in case the particles must be separated in larger sizes.
They are built with a die-cast aluminum or impact-resistant transparent housings and corrugated stainless-steel mesh cartridges. They are fully washable and highly resistant to oil mist, liquid droplets, and sharp debris, which makes them sound like a fortress.
They are mainly used in metalworking, CNC machining, and vacuum systems operating in humid and greasy environments.
Oil-Bath Vacuum Filters
In environments with extreme amounts of impalpable dust, dry filter elements can clog almost instantly, choking the vacuum pump's flow rate. Oil-bath filters overcome this limitation completely.
How it works is that the intake air goes through an internal oil container which traps all the microscopic dust particles in the oil. The air then goes through steel wool cartidges and finally reaches to the pump.
It's main benefit is the fact that it's able to maintain high flow rates and long operation times without clogging, even under extreme dust loads.
It's recommended for lubricated vacuum pumps but is not suitable for dry/oil-free vacuum pumps.
Liquid Separator Syphon Filters
When the vacuum system absorbs liquids as such as water, coolant, or chemical residue, letting them reach the vacuum pump can cause immediate pump failure. Syphon filters act as a defensive barrier against that scenario.
The liquids are collected in a transparent lower container. Integrated magnetic level switches automatically shut down the pump and trigger an alarm when the liquid reaches a critical level.
For operations that require the machine to work 24/7 without wasting time for manual liquid draining, dual-syphon systems with automatic solenoid bypass valves automatically switch from the filled filter to the empty backup one, draining the full filter in the background iwhile the empty filter continues to operate normally.
